Dear Angela Hewitt, I so very much enjoyed your all -Schumann recital yesterday evening at the Wigmore Hall. Incidentally, I was in the same row as the person whose mobile phone jumped into life just before you commenced playing. The person involved was exceedingly apologetic as they tried to get out of the hall - apparently they could not switch the thing off. Anyhow you acted with good grace like the true professional you are. I recently heard one of your recordings by chance on the radio. The piece was the overture to the Ratswahlkantate in the transcription by Wilhelm Kempff. I couldn't wait to learn and play it myself and eventually tracked down the music, which so luckily included the other Kempff Bach transcriptions. They really are a joy to play. Incidentally, you have a fantastic website. I look forward to hearing your recital in London as part of your Bach world tour series. Kind regards, Graham V. Cornwell.

Dear Ms. Hewitt, My son Robin is nine years old and he participated in the Capital Region's Kiwanis Music Festival for the very first time this year, and he won the James P. Kenney Trophy for best musicianship in Junior Piano (ages 7 to 12). We didn't realize how special the trophy was until we found your name on it as a past winner (years 1968 and 1972) . You must have forgotten all about this as it has been such a long time, but, WOW, what a boost of motivation it is for Robin to know that this very same trophy which had sat on your piano inspiring you in the past is now sitting on his inspiring him! We're looking forward to seeing you back here in Ottawa in July. Hopefully we could meet you at the backstage after your recital 😉 Cheers, Li (from Ottawa, Canada).

Gildo Cartoni

Hello again, Angela, At your Cornwall, Ontario recital the other evening I commented to you on your beautiful Schumann reading of "Scenes from Childhood". In error, I mentioned I had a recording of this popular work by your former teacher, pianist Jean-Paul Sevilla. (I am sure you must have known I was wrong!) As I drove home that evening, I began to doubt myself, and sure enough -- it is NOT the Schumann look at childhood that I have by M. Sevilla, but rather a lovely CD named "Homage to Childhood", containing the glimpses of childhood offered by Pierne, Grovlez, Ibert, Stravinsky, Prokofiev, and Debussy. It is no wonder, then, that I could rightly say to you two nights ago that of the various versions I've heard of Schumann's "Scenes of Childhood" by many respected pianists, your so-very-original interpretation of it vaulted itself to the top rung. And kudos to you for that! It is never easy to play technically "easy" pieces in a manner that makes them speak eloquently and deeply. You certainly did that, enduing them with the sense of wonder and innocence and awe that makes childhood, with its journey of "first times", so special. But perhaps even more movingly, you brought to us the sense of loss as we look back to our past and remember how it used to be. The closing number, "The Poet Speaks" moved this listener to tears. Best wishes when M. Sevilla hears you perform the work in England! I am sure he will award his star pupil full marks! With the greatest respect, Margaret Hofmann

Dear Angela, My husband and I seemingly moved heaven and earth to make it to your piano recital last evening in Cornwall, Ontario, Canada. A cancelled business trip to Germany, a cancelled evening in Montreal with a delegation of doctors from around the world, last-minute scrambling to find tickets from your long-ago sold out concert, last-minute repairs to a suddenly ailing car, and -- finally -- we were seated in the beautiful Cornwall recital venue. Was all that chaos worth it? You bet it was! Despite the fact that I seldom attend live concerts -- too easily disappointed, I guess, or perhaps the far-away sound is no match for either my own Steinway (apologies to your Fazioli, but I also love my Steinway!) or to the immediate sound from first-rate CDs -- your recitals are the exception. I have, on more than last night's occasion, driven hours to hear you play live. You are so exceptional and so inspiring and so original that no distance is too great to travel to hear you play. I am sure your legions of fans feel likewise. Thank you for your Rameau of last evening! It introduced his music to me in such an incredibly fresh way, that I am eager now to learn more, especially about his wonderful ornamentation. Yours last evening was as phenomenal as it was ethereal and joy-filled. Had the concert begun and ended with the Rameau, I would have gone home happy. However, you proceeded to charm your packed-hall audience with so much more, including some well-warn warhorses (Beethoven's Sonata "Pathetique", Schumann's "Scenes from Childhood") which, in your hands, but more importantly under the influence of your rich, chameleon-like spirit, became new again. The music was not only reborn; it was transformed. It was heartwarming to visit briefly with your mother again -- what a sweet lady! -- as well as with yourself after the concert. Best wishes in your upcoming Bach World Tour (the new website looks wonderful!). We very much look forward to your next performance in Montreal next March. By the way, many musician friends here in Montreal and I are eagerly awaiting your new DVD on the performance of Bach. We can only imagine how valuable and enriching it will be. Fond good wishes, with thanks as always, Margaret Hofmann

I am deeply convinced that there is no other pianist being gifted to play the piano with such an incredible balance between emotion an intelligence than Ms Hewitt does. I entirely enjoy and appreciate your amazing art of filtering out the spirit of beauty and warmth of music.
