Gent, Flanders Festival with The Art of Fugue

Thursday, September 24, 2015, 8:30 pm

On 24 September, Angela Hewitt will bring the best of Johann Sebastian Bach to Ghent Festival.
What was Bach trying to prove with his ‘Art of Fugue’? And why did it remain unfinished?

These are mysteries and at the same time reasons why the work is bathed in a kind of secrecy. What is clear is that it is a masterpiece with fourteen fugues and four canons. Bach was unrivalled in counterpoint and with this collection, he delivered a tutorial, as it were. You could almost call it a theoretical exposition, but at the same time, the work is stunningly multi-faceted and expressive.

We hand Bach’s swan song over to Angela Hewitt, the ‘grande dame’ of piano who is world renowned for her Bach interpretations.

What Hewitt feels for Bach is difficult to put into words. She dedicated a part of her life to the composer and took on all his solo work. Her CDs are submerged in many well-deserved prizes and distinctions.

She doesn’t play Bach, she sings Bach on the piano.
Hewitt and Bach: pure magic…
