Wolfgang Amadé Mozart’s probably most popular piano concerto is at the centre of the programme. The beguilingly beautiful slow movement is one of the greatest hits of classical music. Under the direction of the renowned Russian conductor Andrey Boreyko, the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg performs with the Canadian star pianist Angela Hewitt, whose Bach recordings are already legendary. This is preceded by a tribute to one of the greats of new music, Giya Kancheli, who was born 90 years ago in Tbilisi. After the interval, the whimsical and enigmatic adventures of Don Quixote in the dazzling sound of Richard Strauss are a delight. The title role is played by a celebrated cello soloist from the ranks of the orchestra, Florian Simma.
