JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH (1685-1750)
Hyperion Records CDA 66746
This was Angela Hewitt’s first CD in her cycle of Bach discs for Hyperion, recorded in 1994. She begins where Bach would have wanted to begin: with the Two- and Three-part Inventions–works that are approached by every piano teacher and student around the world.
‘Performances of exemplary clarity and craftsmanship’ (CDReview)
‘As close to how I would choose to hear (the music) as I have yet had the pleasure of doing’ (Gramophone)

CHROMATIC FANTASIA AND FUGUE IN D MINOR, BWV903 (12’03)
32. Fantasia (6’51)
33. Fugue (5’11)
In his preface to the Two- and Three-part Inventions, Bach wrote that they were for students ‘desirous of learning’ and to give them a good instruction in compositional technique. They were also meant to help the student produce a singing tone, and to develop the strength of every finger. They are also beautiful works of art. The disc also includes his dramatic Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue and the popular C minor Fantasia.
Recorded in the Beethovensaal, Hanover, Germany, on 3, 4, 5 January 1994
