SUMMARY:TMF 2023: Concert in Magione
DESCRIPTION:Joshua Hopkins\, baritone\nTabea Debus\, recorder\nSamuele Telari\, accordion\nAngela Hewitt\, fortepiano and piano \nHandel: Sonata in G minor for recorder and keyboard\, HWV360\nBach: Trio Sonata in E-flat major\, BWV 525 (arr. for recorder and keyboard)\nPärt: Pari Intervallo\nDowland: Lachrimae Pavane\, or “Flow my tears”\nBartók: Pe Loc (No. 3 from “Rumanian Folk Dances”)\nPärt: Spiegel im Spiegel\nVilla-Lobos: Ária (Cantilena) – extract from Bachianas Brasileiras Nr. 5\nHeggie: Songs for Murdered Sisters (words by Margaret Atwood) \nOn a September morning in 2015\, a man in Canada went on a killing spree\, brutally murdering three ex-partners in their homes. They were victims of a crime now recognized as one of the worst domestic violence cases in Canadian history. The murders devastated the community where baritone Joshua Hopkins grew up – his sister\, Nathalie\, was one of these women. Hopkins has since set out on a journey to use his voice to wake people up to the global epidemic of gender-based violence – and their part in it. His call to action was answered by two exceptional creators. Jake Heggie\, hailed by the Wall Street Journal as “the world’s most popular 21st-century opera and art song composer\,” agreed to write the music\, and Margaret Atwood wrote the searing words.\nThe song cycle was co-commissioned by Houston Grand Opera (the chamber version premiered in March 2022 at the Rothko Chapel) and the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa (where it received its orchestral debut in February 2023). This will be its European premiere. \nPreluding this moving work\, we present the brilliant young artists Tabea Debus and Samuele Telari in a wide range of repertoire\, setting the mood for what is to come. \nThere will be no interval. \nPre-concert talk with Eric Friesen and the artists at 8 p.m.

DESCRIPTION:Benjamin Schmid\, violin\nAngela Hewitt\, piano \nBach: Violin and Keyboard Sonata No. 5 in F minor\, BWV 1018\nBach: The Well-Tempered Clavier\, Book I (extracts)\nBach: Sonata No. 1 for solo violin in G minor\, BWV 1001\nBeethoven: Sonata for violin and piano No. 3 in E-flat major\, Op. 12 No. 3 \nAfter meeting last year at a music festival in Graz (at which Benjamin and colleagues improvised on Bach’s Goldberg Variations after Angela’s performance of them)\, Benjamin and Angela decided they must perform some Bach together. Since his debut at the Salzburg Festival as solo partner of Sir Yehudi Menuhin in 1986\, Benjamin has become one of the most important violinists of our time with an intense\, worldwide career already spanning four decades. SUMMARY:TMF 2023: Final concert
DESCRIPTION:Jonathan Ferrucci – Julia Hamos – Angela Hewitt – Mishka Rushdie Momen\, pianos\nBenjamin Schmid\, violin\nRiccardo Cellacchi\, flute\nOrchestra da Camera di Perugia\nAngela Hewitt\, conductor \nBach: Concerto for 3 keyboards in D minor\, BWV 1063\nMozart: Concerto for 3 pianos in F major\, K242\nMozart/Grieg: Piano Sonata in C major “Sonata facile”\, K545 (arr. for 2 pianos by E. Grieg)\nBach: Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 in G major\, BWV 1050 \nWe return to one of our favourite venues in Umbria\, the Basilica of San Pietro in Perugia\, for the closing concert of the festival. Three young pianists (who performed alone at the 2022 Trasimeno Music Festival) join Angela Hewitt in an uplifting programme of multiple piano concertos by Bach and Mozart (and Grieg’s tongue-in-cheek arrangement of a popular Mozart piano sonata). Three Fazioli concert grands at once will make quite the sound! Joined by the Orchestra da Camera di Perugia\, the evening will close with one of the most popular works of all time\, Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 5. We welcome back flautist Riccardo Cellacchi who performed for us in San Savino when he was just a boy. Now he is first flute in the Bern Symphony Orchestra. \nThere will be no interval. \nGala Dinner following the concert in the cloister of the Basilica di San Pietro\, Perugia
