:: Bach Concertos on Hyperion

....For me, however, a more urgent priority comes from Angela Hewitt in Bach Keyboard Concertos (Nos 1 and 7, Brandenburg Concerto No. 5, Triple Concerto in A minor on Hyperion CDA67307 ; Concertos Nos. 2-6 on Hyperion CDA67308 ). Quite aside from Hewitt's light touch and infallible sense of rhythm, there's her feeling for the shape of a phrase and her keen imagination, especially apparent in the first movement of the Brandenburg Concerto. Interesting that the admirably deft Australian Chamber Orchestra under Richard Tognetti includes a harpsichord continuo, which happily never sounds incongruous. Only the First Concerto (in D minor) struck me as a little fussy (too many decorative dynamics) but the rest is superb, the Triple Concerto in particular, seriously insistent but without sounding heavy-handed. Undoubtedly one of the major achievements in Hewitt's Bach series for Hyperion, beautifully recorded.
